I’m happy to argue about it but in the end I’m right and everyone else is wrong – Sensible Soccer is not just the greatest football simulation in history, it’s the greatest sports simulation that’s ever been released. If you’ve never had the pleasure of playing Sensible Soccer, you may well be asking why, twenty years later, many still regard it as the benchmark for fun and playability.

Developed by Sensible Software, it was first released in 1992 for the Amiga and the Atari ST (remember them) and it marked an enormous step forward in making footie on the screen fun. Up until this point, football emulators had consisted of games where it was possible to pick the ball up deep in your own half and run in as straight line towards the opposition goal, stopping only when the ball and the player were in the back of the opposition net.

Sensible Soccer changed all that; the tiny sprites may have looked small but the end result was that more of the pitch could be seen. The ball could be pinged about quickly in all directions without a baffling array of joystick commands. Shooting was a pleasure – you could have a pop from pretty much anywhere and add some dazzling curve to the flight of the ball. The best of us (not necessarily me) all remember scoring headers from the halfway line. Red cards and yellow cards were all available and brandished whenever one of your sprites assaulted another one.

Sensible Software did not use real team and player names; perhaps there were legal implications in doing so but this enabled them to feature dozens and dozens of teams in which all the players almost had the name as their corresponding real life counterpart. But that wasn’t all – other teams on a variety of themes were featured. We had, among others, the Dead Rock Stars and the Necrophiliacs.

Anyway, you don’t have to read any more, just sit back and appreciate some of the finer Sensible Soccer moments, courtesy of a well known online video hosting service.
